ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND - DVD (Jim Carrey classic movie)

Have I seen you before?
Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) have been dating for two years. They love each other, but in many ways they are an awkward couple: Clementine is wild and impulsive, Joel is quiet and introverted. Their turbulent relationship is gradually characterized by more and more quarrels and bad moods. After another argument, Clementine has had enough and leaves Joel. When Joel seeks out Clementine to give her a reconciliation gift, he gets a nasty surprise: Clementine can't recognize him. And not only that, she also got a new boyfriend. Joel learns that Clementine has had her memories of Joel and their relationship erased by the doctor Dr. Mierzwiak (Tom Wilkinson). Angered and disappointed by Clementine's actions, Joel also consults Dr. Mierzwiak to have her erased from his memory.

By a computer-technical intervention in the unconscious Joel's brain, Dr. Mierzwiak's assistants, Patrick (Elijah Wood) and Stan (Mark Ruffalo), remember Clementine one by one. The intervention is carried out at Joel's home, while he is sleeping, and for all involved it will be a turbulent night with many surprises. Patrick tells Stan that he fell in love with Clementine while they were removing her memories, and that he is her new boyfriend. In order to win her love, he has made extensive use of the knowledge he has about Joel and Clementine's good times. Computer nerd Stan, on the other hand, is wild with the young medical secretary Mary (Kirsten Dunst). So when Mary shows up at Joel's apartment, things really get going. Soon Joel's bed is overflowing with chips and beer cans, while Stan and Mary fool around.

Meanwhile, Joel relives all the memories of his relationship with Clementine, before they were erased. It gradually dawns on Joel that he still loves Clementine and does not want her erased from his memory. But since he's unconscious, he can't tell Stan and Patrick. The desperate Joel is now fighting from the depths of his memory to be allowed to keep the memory of - and thus the love for - Clementine, all the while Dr. Mierzwiak, who in the meantime has arrived at the apartment, chases him in the labyrinth of memories. But time is running out from the couple; there will soon be no more minders left. Just before the last memory is erased, Joel and Clementine agree to meet in Montauk for a chance to get to know each other again and fall in love with each other all over again.

Next morning, Joel wakes up with no memory of the night's events. But instead of going to work, he follows a sudden impulse for the first time in his life and calls in sick - and takes the train to Montauk...

The script was written by Charlie Kaufman, who was also behind Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Human Nature and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind.
