Trevor Howard, John Gielgud, David Hemmings and Vanessa Redgrave help make this epic political satire an impressive achievement, which will always stand as an example of outstanding film art. The British captain Nolan (Hemmings) is a committed officer who resents his commander-in-chief, Lord Cardigan (Trevor Howard). Lord Raglan (John Gielgud) is a foolish officer with derailed strategies and a failing memory. Together they are sent to Turkey to stop a Russian invasion, and arrogant and inept as they are, they send several hundred cavalrymen to certain death in an ending that is both shocking and magnificent.
