Alice is back to square one. She has separated from her husband in New York and moved into her father's old house in Los Angeles with her two daughters. And it's her 40th birthday. Her friends try to cheer her up with a trip to the city, and here she meets the charming young Harry at the bar.

Harry and his friends Teddy and George are aspiring filmmakers without a penny in their pockets, so suddenly Alice has a new extended family. The three young men prove to be a fantastic positive influence on Alice's daughters. And Harry remains incredibly charming. But what happens when the children's father suddenly shows up on the doorstep and wants to make it all right again?
